As we all know, the infrared ceramic plate is widely used in gas heater and gas barbecue grill. It is also used in other burners as the thermal storage material . Its material is cordierite with about 35% alumina, 65% Silica and about 5% MgO. Of cause, different product from different manufacturers, the material content has some difference. Each manufacturer has its own material formula.
Infrared ceramic plate is a kind of ceramic round or square plate with small through holes. The plates have different type of surface patterns. But the patterns have a little affection for the working. About the small through holes, it will effect the working greatly. Normally the burner manufacturer will design burners with exact hole size.

The larger holes has better working function. It is easier to get high temperature and the thermal capacity is also higher. So the gas heater burners always design for larger hole sizes. It is normally at least Dia1.38mm hole.But it is not to say we can choose hole size freely. If the hole size is not suitable for the burner design, it is each to cause backfire phenomenon.
What is backfire phenomenon? As we all know, when the burner works, the fire is on the surface of the ceramic plate, but if the pressure outside is larger than inside of the burner box, the fire will come back to the burner box. It is called backfire phenomenon,it is very dangerous.So when we design the burners, we need consider about the gas pressure, valve size,hole size of the ceramic plate. We should choose the suitable infrared ceramic plate for burners. Normally, the bbq grill use small hole size of the ceramic plate, because for grill there is always a steel wet on the burner and there is always full of food on it. It is easy to cause higher pressure. We need use smaller hole size of ceramic plate to increase the gas pressure in side of the box to prevent backfire. For gas heater, as there is no cover on top of the box, we usually use larger size of ceramic plate to keep continuous warm.
